Biodiesel is a renewable fuel made right here in Wisconsin. New research has demonstrated ways to improve biodiesel performance in colder climates. Here are some facts:
- Flinders University developed an additive that lowers the cloud point temperature for biodiesel made from tallow. [Source: “Additive Lowers Tallow-based Biodiesel Cloud Point,” Biodiesel Magazine, http://www.biodieselmagazine.com/article.jsp?article_id=2908, accessed 10/30/08]
- The cloud point is the temperature at which the liquid begins to revert back to a more soluble state.
- The additive lowers the cloud point for tallow-based biodiesel and biodiesel blends from 50 degrees to 21 degrees Fahrenheit, which increases the potential for using biodiesel made from tallow in colder climates.
