Bio Power - Resources and Education

“Bio power” refers to the generation of power and electricity from biomass resources and can be as simple as burning waste products, as is occasionally done today, or it can involve advanced gasification technology that increases efficiency and improves environmental performance.

As technology advances, more efficient and cleaner methods of producing power for Wisconsin’s companies are being developed.  The Wisconsin Bio Industry Alliance is working to stay ahead of the curve, while continuing to develop opportunities to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels in favor of cleaner burning renewable resources.

In 2006, Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle made the following grants to help spur development of the bio power industry sector in Wisconsin:

  • $150,000 to Cashton Area Development Corp. for a community biomass conversion plant to create synthesis gas and char.
  • $45,000 to Western Wisconsin Energy to replace natural gas with bio-based power at the new Western Wisconsin ethanol plant.
  • $7,800 to Miller Brewing to study the feasibility of a high solids anaerobic digester to utilize spent distiller grains as an energy source.
  • $90,000 to CBT Wear Parts to construct an urban anaerobic digester to convert food waste.
  • $100,000 to Stora Enso North America to replace natural gas in their boilers with renewable bio-based synthesis gas.
