
The bio industry in Wisconsin is creating opportunities for the production of a wide range of products, many in development, that promise to replace today’s familiar petrochemical-based products. They include fine and specialty chemicals, plastics, feedstocks, fabrics, pharmaceuticals, and neutriceuticals.
In 2006, Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle made the following grants to help spur development of the bio products industry in Wisconsin:
Our state’s energy independence strategy relies on our ability to become a leader in groundbreaking research and developing technologies to make alternative energies more affordable and available to all Wisconsin citizens.
The term “bio-based product” defines an item, other than food or feed, produced from plant or animal sources. The plant and animal sources are agricultural or forestry materials that can be re-grown, in contrast to the one time use of most petroleum-based materials.
