MILWAUKEE – The NASCAR Nationwide cards at Road America in Elkhart Lake won’t look much different than they have in year’s past, but under the hood, those high-performance engines for the first time will be powered by Suncoco Green E15, a 15-percent ethanol blend produced from corn grown by American farmers.

“We applaud NASCAR and its participating racing teams for making the transition to an ethanol blend for these series,” says Joshua Morby, executive director of the Wisconsin Bio Industry Alliance (WBIA). “Study after study has shown that E15 is safe for use in all vehicles, and NASCAR’s use of the fuel in such a challenging automotive environment is positive proof that ethanol is a viable option at the pump.”

NASCAR team engine builders tested the ethanol blend for several months prior to the start of the season, with positive results, including improved horsepower. This year marks the first year NASCAR is relying on E15 to fuel the cars in its three national touring series, including the Bucyrus 200, scheduled for June 17 – 20 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis.

“NASCAR is committed to being an environmental leader, and the sport has taken significant steps over the years toward conservation by introducing measurable, best-in-class initiatives in recycling, alternative energy, and carbon mitigation,” says Brian France, chairman and chief executive officer of NASCAR.

Fuel used in the NASCAR 2011 series is blended at a Pennsylvania fuel facility and transported to the site of each NASCAR race. The new fuel is pumped directly from tankers at the track, rather than from on-site underground storage tanks.

The Wisconsin Bio Industry Alliance is a diverse group of businesses, environmental groups and statewide and local organizations that have come together to build both public and legislative awareness of the Bio Industry in Wisconsin.
