MILWAUKEE – A photo of a flex-fuel snowmobile, created by University of Wisconsin-Platteville students and sponsored by the Wisconsin Bio Industry Alliance, recently won the people’s choice award in the Renewable Fuels Association’s E-85 Flex-Fuel Challenge contest.
“We were really excited our snowmobile won the people’s choice award,” said Ryan Kubat, co-captain of Platteville’s snowmobile team. “We worked really hard modifying it and making it renewable, so it’s exciting to see our hard work recognized.”
The pictured snowmobile, which the UW-Platteville snowmobile team used for their competitive season, was created as part of the SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge. The team, sponsored by the Wisconsin Bio Industry Alliance, modified a snowmobile to run on any ethanol fuel blend. The sled’s carbon footprint is 90% lower than a standard snowmobile’s.
For the competition people across the country were asked to define, “what is renewable to you?” The people’s choice award was given to the submission that received the most votes throughout the contest.
The E-85 Flex-Fuel Challenge contest began in early March, and ended on April 3. Peer voting took place between April 4 and May 29, 2009. The final winner, a video named “Funky Fresh Flex Fuel,” was selected by a panel of judges who chose the winner based on creativity, quality and relevance.
