Report from USDA Illustrates the Important Role of Ethanol in Growing Wisconsin’s Crop Value

MILWAUKEE – A recent report issued by the United States Department of Agriculture says the total value of Wisconsin crops rose by more than $1 billion dollars last year to $4.8 billion, up from $3.5 billion in 2009.  More than half of the value came from the state's corn crop, which was valued at nearly $2.7 billion.

The Wisconsin ethanol industry has added value to Wisconsin's corn crop by creating a market for Wisconsin corn that was once shipped out of state.  With nine large-scale ethanol plants here in Wisconsin, more of the jobs and money from the corn crop stay within the state.

“Wisconsin has always been one of our nation’s leaders in biofuel production, and the state’s biofuel industry is playing an important role in economic development,” said Joshua Morby, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Bio Industry Alliance. “By providing added value to the corn crop, and by keeping more of those dollars in state, biofuels like ethanol are creating new jobs and generating economic activity for Wisconsin.”

The Wisconsin Bio Industry Alliance is a diverse group of businesses, environmental groups and statewide and local organizations that have come together to build both public and legislative awareness of the Bio Industry in Wisconsin.
